Pornhub, one of the world’s largest adult entertainment sites, is now accepting Bitcoin and Litecoin as payment from users.
The announcement that the porn site would be accepting cryptocurrency in addition to credit cards was announced in a Tweet on Wednesday.
In a statement released the same day, Corey Price, Pornhub’s vice president, said: “As a leader in adult content with over 130 million visitors per day, Pornhub is excited to now offer two widely-used and leading digital currencies for our users.
“Our team continues to pave the way for tech development, testing and implementing new technology for everyday consumers far ahead of the mainstream market.”
The move means that the site’s 130 million + daily visitors can now use BTC or LTC to pay for premium subscriptions to the service.
The two coins are in addition to Verge (XVG), which the company has accepted for payment since 2018.
In addition to this, it allows its adult entertainers to accept Tether (USDT) as payment. Tether, known as a stablecoin, tracks the US Dollar.
In 2018, around 10% of adult performers associated with the site had opted to be paid in the cryptocurrency.
Pornhub was launched in Canada in 2007, a year before Bitcoin was born. As of 2020, it is the tenth most popular website in the world by traffic volume and the third most popular adult website.
According the cryptocurrency news site Cointelegraph, the pseudonymous Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto foresaw how digital currency would help people who wanted to view adult material.
This quote attributed to Satoshi from 2010 reveals a lot about the early thinking behind Bitcoin:
“Bitcoin would be convenient for people who don’t have a credit card or don’t want to use the cards they have, either don’t want the spouse to see it on the bill or don’t trust giving their number to “porn guys”, or afraid of recurring billing.”
